Galen A. Smith, 90, of 1454 South Ave., Lewis Run passed away, Monday, May 24th, 2010 at Bradford Manor.
Born January 7, 1920, in Endeavor, PA, he was the son of the late George A. and Myrtle (McCollough- Hillard) Smith.
On August 22, 1940 in Olean, NY, he married Mary E. “Tootie” (Foster) Smith who survives.
Mr. Smith was a 1938 graduate of Bradford High School and graduate of St. Bonaventure with a degree in accounting. He had been employed at South Penn and Forest Oil in the accounting department, and then for 17 years at Boise Cascade, retiring as an assistant plant manager in 1986. He also owned and operated Galen Smith Insurance Agency from 1965 to 2008.
He was a very active member of the Evans Memorial United Methodist Church. He served the church in many capacities including, the Church Board, Treasurer, and Sunday School Teacher.
He was a member of the Zippo Archer’s and Gideon Bible Society.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Gail A. (Ronald E.) Thompson and Shelley (Edward) Wright, all of Bradford, five grandchildren: Craig Thompson, Elizabeth Bryant, Edward Earl Wright, Jr., Amanda Troisi, and Andrew Wright, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Bradley J. Thompson who died October 20, 2006, one half sister Virginia Schubert, and one half brother Guy Hillard, Sr.
Family will be receiving friends on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, from 3 to 5pm and 7 to 9pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. East Main St., and again on Thursday, May 27th from 10:00 to 11:00 in the Evans Memorial United Methodist Church where services will be held at 11:00am with Rev. David Stains, Pastor, and Rev. G. Edward Hillard, a nephew, Co-officiating.
