Aletha R. Mays, 89, formerly of 42 Buchanan Hollow, passed away Saturday, May 29th, 2010 at the Bradford Ecumenical Home.
Born February 23, 1921, in Colegrove, PA, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Irma (Keesler) Herzog.
Mrs. Mays was a graduate of Colegrove High School and the Bradford Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1943. On February 5, 1944 in Bradford she married Raymond L. Mays who proceded her in death on October 4, 1996.
She worked as nurse for the Bradford Hospital, Bovaird & Seyfang, and retired from W.R. Case and Sons in 1986. She also worked part time as a school nurse in the Bradford Area School District. She had the distinction of being the first plant nurse in Bradford when she was hired by Bovaird and Seyfang.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, and the Bradford Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Group. Her volunteer work included: the Food Bank, Friendship Table, Bradford Ecumenical Home, American Red Cross, and the McKean County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
Surviving are two sons: Jerome “Jerry” (Christine) Mays of Pleasant Lake, IN, and Randy (Jo) Mays of Etters, PA, four sisters: Leila Shonts of Taylorsville, NC, Charlotte Dean of Smethport, Martha Oxentine of Taylorsville, NC, Philinda Scott of Cleveland, OH, a brother, Gilbert Herzog of Smethport, four grandchildren: Bryan Mays, Karyn Christenson, Tammy Barnaba and Jody Mays, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three sisters: Rena Vicere, Cinderella Taylor and Hazel Smith.
Friends are invited to call on Friday, June 4, 2010, from 3 to 5pm and 7 to 9pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. East Main St. and again on Saturday, June 5th from 10:00am to 11:00am in the First Baptist Church where funeral and committal services will be held at 11:00am with Rev. Leon Canfield, pastor, officiating. Mausoleum entombment will be in Willow Dale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bradford Ecumenical Home, VNA Hospice, or National Spina Bifida Association.
