John Joseph Cummiskey, 89, a long time resident of Bradford, passed away Saturday, June 19th, 2010 at The Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born July 26, 1920, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Francis “Frank” and Mary Ellen (Hogan) Cummiskey. He was a 1938 graduate of St. Bernard High School.
John served with the United States Army as a PFC in the 982nd Signal Company overseas from April 1943 thru October of 1945. He was awarded the E.A.M.E. Campaign Medal with 4 service stars.
He was employed with the United Automobile Worker’s Union at the GM Electro-Motive Division in La Grange IL.
He was a member of St. Bernard Church, the VFW, the American Legion, the St. Francis 50 plus Group, the NYC group of Smile Train, Ring #44 Boxing Club of Buffalo, and wrote weekly sports stories for the Bradford Journal.
John is survived by two sisters: Ann Cummiskey of Bradford, and Mary AuBuchon of Park Forest IL,, one brother, William (Mary Bickel) Cummiskey of Bradford and East Aurora, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant brother Frank.
Family will be receiving friends on Tuesday June 22nd from 3-5pm & 7-9pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes S. Ave. where a prayer service will be held on Wednesday at 9:30am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Bernard Church with Father Samuel Slocum, pastor of St. Francis Church as Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.
