Slippery road conditions were partially to blame for an accident on Interstate 86 in the town of Allegany near the Allegany rest stop at about 4 p.m. Dec. 7. The expressway was closed in both the eastbound and westbound lanes from the town of Alelgany to Carrollton until 8:45 p.m. because several other cars slid off the icy highway. On Friday morning, a similar accident closed down I-86 between Olean and Hinsdale for many hours. Monday’s accident was handled by the New York State Police, who reported htat a tractor-trailer was trying to avoid a small car that went out of control on the slippery highway. The truck clipped the car, which then rolled over, a Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s deputy said. The tractor-trailer then lost control and crossed the median and rolled over. The drivers of both vehicles suffered minor injuries and were taken to Olean General Hospital for treatment. The driver of the small vehicle was charged with failure to maintain lane, said a state trooper. Police were assisted at the scene by volunteer fire departments from Limestone, Salamanca and Kill Buck. Photo by Kate Day Sager/Olean Times Herald
