Charles Joseph Sluga, 93, of Mount Jewett PA

Charles Joseph Sluga, 93, of 21 Anderson , Mt. Jewett, PA died Saturday, February 20, 2010, at St. Mary’s East Home of Erie in Erie, PA.

Born on August 23, 1916, in Port Allegany, PA, he was the son of the Frank and Mary (Mohar) Sluga. He married the late Ruth Irene Sloppy on November 13, 1948, in Mt. Jewett, PA.

Charlie graduated from Hazelhurst High School in 1934. He was employed as an automotive mechanic at Johnson Keesler Garage and the Hilltop Garage in Mt. Jewett, and as a service manager at Fairway Ford in Bradford. He maintained the fleet of diesel trucks for Owens Illinois in Bradford until he retired in 1986 at the age of 70.

Charlie served in the Army Infantry Division in Europe with his brother,

Ed, during World War II, while his sister, Helen, served as a nurse.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mount Jewett, and was a member of the American Legion Post 0574 for 65 years, the VFW Post 6347, and the Mt. Jewett Volunteer Fire Department.

He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he volunteered in many capacities.

He is survived by his three children, Joel (Barbara) Sluga of Mentor, OH, Suzanne (Mike) Mahoney of Erie, PA, and Robin Sluga Vick of New Port Richey Florida; by three brothers Howard (Nellie) Sluga of Kane, PA, and Edgar (Lois) Sluga and William (Dot) Sluga of Mt. Jewett, PA; by three sisters, Helen Romaine of Phoenix, AZ, Daisy Korbar of Warren, PA, and Norma (Rudy) Batista of Mt. Jewett, PA; sister-in-law Donna Hartman of Tucson, AZ; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and James; two sisters, Mary and Julia; son-in-law, Randy Vick; and great grandson, Mikey Felice.

Friends will be received at the Cummings Funeral Home, Mt. Jewett, from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm Tuesday, Feb. 23rd. Parish prayers will be conducted at 8:30 followed by a Rosary Service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am Wednesday, Feb 24th at St. Joesph’s Catholic Church with Rev. Vincent Cieslewicz officiating. Burial will be at Bridge View Cemetery along side his wife, Ruth.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mt. Jewett Volunteer Fire Department, the Mt. Jewett Library, or a charity of your choice.
