Barbara Ann Peterson of 4115 S. Nine Mile Road, Lot 99 passed away peacefully Sunday (March 7, 2010) in her home.
Born March 13, 1928, in Olean, NY she was the daughter of Russell Hansel and Evelyn Scott Hansel. Evelyn later married Edward Schifley, who adopted Barbara at the age of 6. On February 1, 1947 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Olean she married Carl “Holger” Peterson who survives.
Barbara was a graduate of Portville High School. For several years she worked in the circulation department of the Bradford Era. In 1960 Barbara and her husband moved to Houston Texas. After retirement, they traveled back and forth from Texas to Allegany, permanently moving to Allegany in 2007.
She was a former president of the JC Wives and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also very active with many community functions including the Y.W.C.A., the Little Theater Group as well as the American Red Cross.
Surviving besides her husband are a daughter Kathleen (Al) Sparks of Houston, TX; 4 grandchildren Scott Frey, Russell Frey, Leah Ann Bulsterbaum and Jillian Peterson; 5 great-grandchildren; a half sister Sandra Fitch; a half brother Robert Hansel of Allegany and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son Dennis Peterson in 2006.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral services will be held Wednesday (March 10, 2010) at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Rev. Robert Goode will officiate. Burial will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
