Court records: Harrison Valley man acted “crazy” before shootout with state police
By MARCIE SCHELLHAMMER
Era Reporter
marcie@bradfordera.com
The incident leading up to the death of a Harrison Valley man following a standoff Sunday with state police began with him walking down the street carrying an assault rifle and acting “drunk and crazy,” according to court records.
Joshua Wheeler, 30, of 200 School St., was shot after a 5-hour standoff with the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team at his residence in Harrison Valley on Sunday afternoon.
An affidavit of probable cause in support of an arrest warrant for Wheeler — filed Sunday with on-call Magisterial District Judge Annette Easton before the standoff came to its tragic conclusion — was filed by Coudersport-based state police Cpl. Michael Murray, the crime unit supervisor for the barracks.
At 9:46 a.m. Sunday, Coudersport-based state police received a call indicating that Wheeler was “walking down School Street with an AK-47 and he was drunk and crazy,” the affidavit reads.
Patrol cars were dispatched to the scene. Police learned that Wheeler had gone to the residence of Grant Talbot and obtained at least 30 rounds of ammunition for the rifle, “and stated that he was going to make a list,” the affidavit indicates. Police were told that Wheeler was going to jail in New York state for a third or fourth offense of driving under the influence of alcohol; police were unable to determine immediately if that were the case.
