Mrs. Marie L. Krakat, 89, of Bradford PA

Mrs. Marie L. Krakat, 89, West Washington Street, passed away Sunday, March 7th, 2010 at  Bradford Regional Medical Center.

Born March 29, 1920 in West Hickory, she was a daughter of the late Wayne A. and Sadie (Swatzler) Hunter Sr. She attended Bradford Schools.

On March 23, 1946 in the East End Presbyterian Church, she married George G. Krakat who survives.

She had been employed by the Market Basket grocery store for many years, and then worked as a business agent for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 880 until her retirement in 1985. Read the rest of this entry »

Nancy K. Moonan, 74, of Bradford PA

Nancy K. Moonan, 74, of 53 Corwin Lane, a lifetime resident of Bradford, crossed over on Sunday, March 7th, 2010 at the Bradford Regional Medical Center.

Born February 29, 1936, in Bradford she was a daughter of the late Grant O. and Helen E. (Huntoon) Work.

On June 11, 1955 in Bradford she married Charles C. Moonan Sr. who died on June 10, 1995.

She was formerly employed at O’Mara’s Dairy Bar, the Main St. Diner, the Donut Shop, Dresser Manufacturing, J.C. Pennys, Clarks Discount Store, and Tops Friendly Markets. She sold Sarah Coventry Jewelry and Ideal Home products. She was a volunteer for the Derrick City Volunteer Fire Department. Read the rest of this entry »

Myra E. Peterson, 72, of Bradford PA

Myra E. Peterson, 72, of 81 Edgewood Road, passed away, Sunday, March 7th, 2010, surrounded by her loving family  at The Pavilion at BRMC.

Born August 15, 1937, in Bradford, she was a daughter of the late Mervin H. and Mary Ann (Quinn) Yohe.

On February 17, 1959 in Limestone, NY, she married Martin E. Peterson who survives.

Mrs. Peterson attended Bradford High School. She enjoyed spending time with her family  and with her grandchildren and great grand children, who were the light of her life. She also was best known for her baking. She enjoyed her companionship with her cockatiel “Clyde” for over ten years, and quilting. Read the rest of this entry »

Lennis T. Leininger, 80, of Bradford PA

Lennis T. Leininger, 80, formerly of 124 Summer Street, passed away, Friday, March 5th, 2010 at the Bradford Manor.

Born November 15, 1929, in Soddy, TN, she was the daughter of the late Marion and Nannie (Collins) Jones.

On August 9, 1956, in Ringold, GA, she married Herbert H. Leininger who proceded her in death.

Mrs. Leininger attended schools in Chattanooga, Tenn. She had worked in house keeping for the City of Elyria, Ohio, in the Administration building for seventeen years. After moving to Bradford she continued working in house keeping and worked for Bradford Public Library, Penn Hills Club, YWCA and Goodwill Industries. Read the rest of this entry »

Hit and Run in Foster Township

At 7:36 pm, a hit and run was reported in Foster Township.

The hit and run occurred in the area of 354 Bolivar Drive.

A man was getting out of his vehicle when another car hit his.  The stationary car then hit the man.  The man said that it knocked the wind out of him.  It was unknown if he had any serious injuries.

No description could be given for the perpetrating vehicle, as it drove off quickly, and in an unknown direction.

Foster Township Police and Bradford City ambulance were dispatched to the scene.

Minor Accident in Bradford Township

At 1:43 am, a minor accident was reported in Bradford Township, PA.

The accident occurred at the intersection of South Ave., and Congress Street.

2 vehicles were involved, and no one was injured.

Bradford Township Police were sent to the scene.

Both vehicles required a flatbed to remove them from the scene.

Pitt-Bradford Names 269 Students to the Dean’s List

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford had named 269 students to the dean’s list for the fall 2009 semester. Dean’s list status is awarded to full-time students who have earned a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the semester.

Students earning a 4.0 average from Bradford were John Lonzi, a senior accounting and business management major; Lauren Lawson, a junior elementary education major; Diana Lawton, a junior elementary education major; James Kinney, a senior environmental education K-12 major; Kaitlin Zapel, a sophomore human relations major; and Leslie Shallop, a sophomore nursing major;

Charles J. “Chuck” Devitt

Charles J. ” Chuck” Devitt, 84, of 11 Fairbanks Ave., Bradford, passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at the Bradford Regional Medical Center.

He was born on March 5, 1925 in Rochester, MI, a son of the late Charles S. and Florence G. Ellis Devitt.

On December 4, 1953 he married Deloris M. Lee, who survives.

Mr. Devitt was employed by the Detroit Zoo as an animal trainer and transporter for a number of years as well as being a jack of all trades.

He was an exceptional hunter and fisherman and he also loved just spending time outdoors. Read the rest of this entry »

William L. “Bill” Wells, 85, of Bradford PA

William L.”Bill”  Wells, 85, of 213 Jackson Ave., passed away, Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Born July 4, 1924, in Bradford, he was the son of the late Charles D. and Madeline B. (Burt) Wells. On June 2, 1954 at St. Raphel’s Church in Eldred, he married Anna H. (Hahn) Wells who survives.

Mr. Wells was a 1942 graduate of Bradford High School. On May 17, 1943 he enlisted in the United States Army and served during WW II in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, American Campaign Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged on November 25, 1945.

After returning from the service Mr. Wells worked for Taylor Upholstering. On July 30, 1951 he began his employment as a professional Fire Fighter for the City of Bradford Fire Department. He was promoted on January 1, 1985, to Engineer, then on December 6, 1988, he was appointed Lieutenant, on July 4, 1989 he retired. He was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters Union for 38 years, the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of the Odd Fellows and a member of First United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons Charles Wells of Brooklyn, NY, and Stephen (Lori) Wells of Winchester, VA, a sister, Doris Schelander, three grandchildren: Stephen John Wells, Natalie Janet Wells and Amber Lee Wells.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Harriet Brown.

Family will be receiving friends on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 10:00 to Noon at the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. South Ave., at which time funeral and committal services will with Rev. Dennis Swineford pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church 23-25 Chambers Street, Bradford.

Domestic at the High Rise

At 6:16 pm, a domestic dispute was reported at the High Rise.

The caller reported that the domestic was either above or below them, on the 3rd or 5th floor.

The caller said that 2 people were involved, and arguing could be heard in their apartment.

Bradford City Police were dispatched.

Upon arriving, the arguing couple could not be found, and Bradford City PD returned to their patrol.

Gwendolyn H. Shaughnessy Covert, 91, of Bradford PA

Gwendolyn H. Shaughnessy  Covert, 91, formerly of 312 East main St., and 157 High St., Bradford passed away Friday, February 26th surrounded by her loving family at the Bradford Manor.

Born March 21, 1918, in Bradford she was a daughter of the late George and Felicia (Bodine) Hemphill. She was a 1935 graduate of Bradford High School and very active in the Reunion Committee.

On July 17, 1954 in St. Francis Church, she married Robert T. Shaughnessy who died September 4, 1964, In 1966 she married Walter D. Covert who died in February of 1967. Read the rest of this entry »

James R. Strang, 63, of Bradford PA

James R. Strang, 63, of Bradford, passed away, Thursday, February 25th, 2010 at the Bradford Manor.

Born January 30, 1947, in Olean, NY, he was a son of the late Clifford and Anna May (Hurrle) Strang.

Mr. Strang attended Port Allegany Schools, and served in the United States Air Force.

Surviving is a daughter, Charlotte Marie Strang, a sister, Jeanne Caruso of Buffalo, and a brother, Gary Strang of North Carolina. Read the rest of this entry »

MVA in Bradford Township

At 5:54 pm, an MVA was reported in Bradford Township.

The accident occurred on Minard Run, at the bottom of the hill.

1 car was reported to have been on it’s side.

2 people were in the vehicle, and were still in the vehicle at the time of the call.

It was unknown if they were injured or trapped at the time of dispatch.

DEP Orders Schreiner to Provide Permanent Solution to Water Issues on Hedgehog Lane

The Department of Environmental Protection has ordered Schreiner Oil and Gas Co. to provide a permanent solution to water supply issues at two homes the company’s drilling activity impacted near Hedgehog Lane, McKean County.

DEP previously determined that the company, based in Massillon, Ohio, was liable for affecting the water supplies of homes in that area of Bradford Township. Water supplies at seven homes have been restored, but the problem remains unresolved at two other residences.

“The families in this neighborhood have had their lives disrupted for too long,” DEP Regional Director Kelly Burch said. “While Schreiner had installed treatment systems at these two homes, they were only a partial solution. The order calls on Schreiner to rectify the situation completely.” Read the rest of this entry »

Francis G. Rose, 90, of Bradford PA, Formerly of Kane PA

Francis G. Rose, 90, of 3 Southgate Rd., Bradford, formerly of Kane, passed away on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 at Bradford Manor.

Born January 13, 1920, in Kane he was a son of the late Frank and Blanche (Broutin) Rose.

On February 24, 1949 in Kane, he married LaVerta “Bootsie” (Cunningham) Rose who survives.

He was a 1938 graduate of Kane High School. He entered the United States Army on February 26, 1942 and served during W.W.II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on October 2, 1945. Read the rest of this entry »
